Animals can experience eye issues that impair their daily lives, just like people. These diseases can include corneal ulcers, cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, eye tumors, deformities in the eyelids, dry eyes, and retinal degeneration.

To diagnose eye illness, it is necessary to measure intraocular pressure (IOP). A complete eye exam requires the diagnostic process known as intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement.

Let’s start with some fundamental physics. “Force per unit area” is how pressure is defined. For instance, the force of a gas’ moving atoms striking the surrounding container will cause it to exert pressure. Despite their similarities, fluids all have unique qualities. When a static fluid is at rest, its stress is determined by its depth, density, and gravity. When a static fluid fills a container, its force is spread uniformly across the container (the atoms of the liquid act like one giant enclosed object).

It is possible to imagine the eye as a curved, fluid-filled container with internal static pressure. So, at any point along the container (like the cornea) that has been perfectly flattened, an IOP can be measured. The flattening or bending force necessary to determine IOP can be applied and precisely measured with a tonometer.
